OBJECTIVE: To describe the activity pattern of the vastus lateralis muscle in dogs at walk measured by surface electromyography (EMG) in relation to kinematics and kinetics of the pelvic limb. STUDY DESIGN: Experimental. ANIMALS: Malinois dogs (n=11). METHODS: Dogs (mean +/- SD age, 5.5 +/- 2.9 years; weight, 27.3 +/- 3.8 kg; shoulder height, 62.7 +/- 3.3 cm) walked on a treadmill system with integrated force plates, which allowed simultaneous analysis of kinematics, kinetics, and EMG data from all limbs.

Osgood-Schlatter disease (OSD) is a condition affecting human adolescents in which there is partial separation of bone fragments from the tibial tuberosity at the site of insertion of the patellar ligament to the tibial tuberosity. Tensile trauma seems to be the most likely aetiology. Clinical signs in people consist of swelling and pain at the proximal part of the tibial tuberosity and around the distal end of patellar ligament. Radiographs frequently show small ossicles at the patellar ligament insertion. Conservative treatment is usually curative.
Objectives: Little is known about the risks of injury to dogs participating in the relatively new sport of canine agility. The purpose of this study was to identify the factors that put the participating dog at risk as well as determine the anatomical sites that were most commonly injured. Methods: A retrospective survey using a paper and web-based data collection instrument was used to evaluate dogs participating in the sport of canine agility. Results: Of the 1627 dogs included in the study, 33% were injured, and of those 58% were injured in competition.
Objectives: To investigate the long term reliability of clinician and owner visual analogue score (VAS) for dogs with unilateral forelimb lameness attributable to fragmented medial coronoid process (FMCP) when compared to objective gait analysis. Methods: Nine dogs with unilateral thoracic limb lameness due to FMCP underwent inverse dynamics gait analysis at initial presentation, and at one, two, six and 12 months following diagnosis. Total support moments were calculated and a total support moment ratio (TSMR) derived as an objective assessment of thoracic limb asymmetry.
Conservative treatment of partial gastrocnemius muscle avulsions in dogs using therapeutic ultrasound - A force plate study.
Objectives: In this report two cases of partial gastrocnemius muscle avulsion treated with pulsed therapeutic ultrasound are described. Methods: The outcome in these two dogs was evaluated using ultrasonographic imaging and the measurement of ground reaction forces with a force plate. Results: Both dogs showed an amelioration of the clinical signs within one month after commencement of the ultrasound therapy. The follow-up time for these cases was one year and six months respectively. Both of the dogs were free of lameness and had returned to their normal amount of exercise.
Fibrosis of the iliopsoas muscle can result in pelvic limb lameness in dogs. In this case report we describe fibrosis after an initial injury of the iliopsoas muscle in a dog. A seven-year-old hunting dog developed an acute onset of lameness and pain of the left pelvic limb after an intense period of exercise. Two months later, the dog was referred for evaluation of a non-weight-bearing left pelvic limb lameness. Orthopaedic examination revealed pain on hyperextension and internal rotation of the left coxofemoral joint.
The objective of this study was to examine the behaviour of canine chondrocytes following colonisation of a beta-tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP, Cerasorbâ, Curasan) matrix. In total, five of these cylinders were inoculated with 1.5 ml of cell suspension and subsequently incubated for about one week. In the second part of the experiment, another five Cerasorbâ cylinders were each studded with two cartilage chips of variable size and then incubated for about one week. The series of experiments were analyzed using cell staining and imaging techniques that included scanning electron microscopy.
A four-month-old golden retriever developed quadriceps contracture following management of a comminuted femoral fracture with an intramedullary pin and cerclage wire. Management involved surgical release of the quadriceps, rigid stabilisation of the fracture, use of a static stifle flexion apparatus and postoperative physiotherapy. The dog returned to full activity with normal stifle function
