The surgical repair of acetabular physeal fractures in four kittens using a screw and tension band technique is reported. This was an appropriate method for restoring articular congruency and improving pelvic alignment. All cases had an excellent outcome and full limb use following fracture repair. In kittens younger than 12 weeks, there is a possibility of premature fusion of the acetabular bone resulting in development of a deformed, shallow acetabulum and hip subluxation.

Three immature cats with growth abnormalities of the distal radius secondary to trauma were presented between July 2001 and July 2003. Initial injuries included a Salter-Harris type II fracture of the distal radial physis in one cat, fractures of the styloid process of the ulna in two cats, and metacarpal fractures in one cat. The cats were between 3.5 and 4.5 months of age at the time of injury. Damage to the distal radial physis resulted in a variable degree of shortening of the radius in all cats.
Early Clinical Experience with Osteochondral Autograft Transfer for Treatment of Osteochondritis Dissecans of the Medial Humeral Condyle in Dogs

Objective—To establish whether osteochondral autograft transfer (OAT) procedures for osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the canine elbow would restore articular contour, resurface osteochondral defects with hyaline cartilage, and resolve lameness in the short term.
Study Design—Case series.
Animals—Dogs (n=27) with medial humeral condylar OCD.
A five-month-old, male, 16 kg, mixed breed dog was presented for an acute non-weight bearing lameness of the right hind limb. A subtotal avulsion of the quadriceps tendon at its patellar insertion was diagnosed through radiography and ultrasonography. Two nylon sutures secured with a stainless steel crimp were placed in a locking loop pattern in the quadriceps tendon and through a transverse 2.7 mm drill-hole in the patella. No external coaptation was used postoperatively. A full functional recovery was observed, and was followed for one year postoperatively.
Thoracic stenosis causing lateral compression of the spinal cord in two immature Dogues de Bordeaux.
This case report describes a novel developmental vertebral malformation in two young Dogues de Bordeaux, which was diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging. Both dogs were treated surgically with reasonable success.

ABSTRACT Objective—To measure and compare the strain of wires tensioned with alternate (ALT) and simultaneous (SIM) tensioning in a single-ring fixator construct and compare the stiffness of these constructs under axial loading. Study Design—Experimental mechanical study. Sample Population—Twenty-four, 84 mm diameter, single-ring constructs. Methods—Twenty-four, 84 mm diameter, single-ring constructs were assembled using 2 1.6 mm wires placed at a 60° angle tensioned with either ALT or SIM technique to 90 kg tension.
Necrotising fasciitis is an uncommon and potentially devastating disease which has been infrequently reported in animals. This brief communication describes an unusual presentation of necrotising fasciitis in two immature Bull Terriers. Both animals were admitted with a history of minimal trauma yet rapidly progressive, localising, disproportionate pain. Streptococcus canis was cultured from sub-periosteal fluid-filled pockets surrounding the femur in both cases.
Two dogs, 3 and 6 months of age, were presented with painful, swollen shoulder and carpal joints; reluctance to stand; and pyrexia. Radiographs in both cases revealed an irregular lucent zone in the metaphysis of the proximal humerus, parallel and adjacent to the physis. The same lucent zone was also evident in the physes of the distal radial and ulnar metaphyses. Clinical signs and radiographs were consistent with hypertrophic osteodystrophy. Clinical signs resolved in both dogs with administration of carprofen, tramadol, and intravenous fluids.
Clinical, radiographic, and pathologic abnormalities in dogs with multiple epiphyseal dysplasia: 19 cases (1991-2005).
OBJECTIVE: To determine clinical, radiographic, and pathologic abnormalities in dogs with multiple epiphyseal dysplasia (MED). DESIGN: Retrospective case series. ANIMALS: 19 dogs with MED from 10 litters. PROCEDURES: The diagnosis was made on the basis of radiographs of the shoulder region and vertebral column. Ten dogs underwent necropsy. RESULTS: There were 11 Hygenhund, 6 Dunker, 1 Golden Retriever, and 1 English Pointer. Most dogs were examined because of lameness that developed at 5 to 8 months of age.
Proximal tibial epiphysiodesis to reduce tibial plateau slope in young dogs with cranial cruciate ligament deficient stifle.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of proximal tibial epiphysiodesis to reduce the tibial plateau slope in young dogs with cranial cruciale ligament (CCL) deficient stifles. Of the 14 treated dogs, eight had a bilateral injury, for a total of 22 joints. After physical and radiographical examination and measurement of tibial plateau slope, all of the dogs underwent surgery.
