A 2 year old gelding Swiss horse presented lame Multiple radiographs were made because of difficulty in localizing the lesion by physical examination. Radiographs of the right hind limb are shown centering on the distal metatarsal bone. Radiographs made on day 1 Radiographic features
- Focal well delineated mature appearing periosteal new bone originating from the distal metatarsus laterally and cranially
- A lucent area is present within the center of the lesion
- Remaining bones and joints are within normal limits
Radiographic diagnosis
- Periosteal new bone with an appearance of an involucrum surrounding a cavity probably containing a sequestrum
- Surgical exploration was performed with identification of a chronic draining tract and underlying sequestrum
- Clinical recovery was without difficulty
Comments
- The pattern of focal periosteal response is typical for that forming around a small sequestrum
- Periosteal response following soft tissue injury/inflammation would be more generalized without the suggestion of it focusing on the lucent cavity
