Every equine hoof has a certain amount of distortion. This presents in various forms: flares, dished toes, under-run heels, and cracks. Several farrier texts anecdotally suggest a correlation between hoof capsule distortion and lameness. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effects of the Sigafoos Series I glue-on shoe on hoof capsule distortion, and specifically, the effect on dorsal wall deviation. Measurements of the hoof were made using the Metron hoof evaluating system by Eponatech.

Systems theory is a way of describing complex and dynamic relationships. We applied systems theory to the structure and function of the equine foot in an effort to better understand laminitis and, in so doing, reconcile the various theories of its etiopathogenesis and find more universally effective preventive and therapeutic strategies. The foot is described as an open system, and its inherent vulnerabilities are explored. Cascade failure is discussed as a potentially unifying theory of laminitis.

Various farriery methods have been described for treating chronic laminitis, yet no particular method has become the preferred choice. The wooden shoe may possess certain advantages such as redistributing load evenly over the palmar/plantar section of the foot due to its flat solid construction and the mechanics (bevelled perimeter, breakover and heel elevation) that can be incorporated directly into the fabrication of the shoe.

Sample Population—Formalin-fixed samples of stratum internum obtained from the mid region of the dorsal aspect of the hoof wall from the forelimbs of 35Thoroughbred cadavers (including foals [n = 9], yearlings [5], 2 year olds [6], racing horses [5], and mares [10]).

AbstractAcute or recurrent laminitis often results in marked structural or mechanical disruption of the hoof with rotation or sinkage of the coffin bone within the hoof capsule in affected horses or those predisposed to developing this complex and devastating disease. A complete knowledge and understanding of laminitis and its complex pathophysiologic cascade remains elusive despite the substantial time and effort that many scientists and clinicians have dedicated over the last few decades.
