When and why did you decide that you wanted to become a veterinarian and did anyone influence your decision?
I knew before entering the Gymnasium that I want to be a Vet. My parents were human general Practicioners in the mountain area. I often helped my parents for small wound closures and other procedures. (splinting fractures after ski accidents). I had exposure to the medical field from beginning. And my uncle is a veterinarian, still praciticing: general practice, large and small animals. I spent the majority of my vacations in his practice and was assisting him. So my wish to be a vet was very early. The reason to be a vet and not a human doctor was the fact to help animals and the big variety of cases.
Having taken the initial plunge what or who influenced you to specialise in Orthopaedics?
During my vet school I was able to assist during surgeries in the small animal clinic and there I started to change interest: from food animal to small animal surgery. The two persons who mainly influenced me doing orthopedics after the vet-School were Don Hulse and Pierre Montavon. Both of them are great teachers and both are extra-ordinated surgeons who can impart not only the knowledge but also the full commitment to the profession. I am very thankful to these two teachers.
