J. M. Gayle and W. R. Redding

Equine vet. Educ. (2007) 19 (4) 222-224

There are numerous reported methods of performing diagnostic anaesthesia of the proximal suspensory ligament of the hindlimb. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of inadvertent infiltration of the distal tarsal joints (tarsometatarsal and centrodistal joints) and tarsal sheaths when performing proximal plantar metatarsal anaesthesia.

Comparison of 2 methods of centesis of the bursa of the biceps brachii tendon of horses

J. Schumacher, L. Livesey, W. Brawner, J. Taintor and N. Pinto

Equine vet. J. (2007) 39 (4) 356-359

Reasons for performing study - Centesis of the bicipital bursa using an 8.9 cm long spinal needle has been reported but the alternative of employing a 3.8 cm long hypodermic needle requires validation.

Objective—To determine the durations of the local anesthetic effect and plasma procaine concentrations associated with 5- and 10-mg doses of procaine hydrochloride (with or without 100 g of epinephrine) administered SC over the lateral palmar digital nerves of horses.

Animals—6 healthy adult horses.
